Clear ziplock bags in five sizes, smallest to largest, on a warehouse work table

How to choose a ziplock bag: size and thickness

A bag that is too small will not close, and one that is too big wastes space and money. How to measure, choose a thickness and send a request that can be priced right away.

In short: measure the item, add room for its thickness, and pick the nearest size up. Our clear bags are 100 microns, thick enough for almost anything. Not sure? Send us the item's size and we will recommend one.

How a bag size is written

A ziplock bag's size is written width × length. The width is the opening side, where the zip is, and the length is measured from the bottom to the zip. For example, 100×150 is a bag 10 cm wide and 15 cm long. Our sizes are in millimetres.

How much room to leave

The item has to go in through the opening and still leave room to close the zip. A rule of thumb:

  • A flat item (a document, a card, jewelry): 1 to 2 cm of room in width and length is enough.
  • An item with volume (a screw, a part, a component): add the item's thickness to each dimension, because when the bag closes around it, it "takes" width and length from the bag.
  • Several items together: measure the stack as one item.

After the calculation, pick the nearest size up from our common sizes. Any other size can be requested.

Which thickness to choose

Bag thickness is measured in microns, thousandths of a millimetre. American catalogues use mil: 1 mil is about 25 microns.

Thin ziplock bags, of about 50 microns or less, suit light items such as documents and jewelry. Heavy items or items with sharp edges, such as screws, tools and metal parts, need a thick bag of about 100 microns.

Our clear ziplock bags are always 100 microns: thick enough for heavy and sharp parts, and just as good for everything else.

Clear, anti-static or VCI?

The same ziplock bag comes in several versions. Most items suit a clear bag. For electronic components there are anti-static bags, and for metal parts that need protection from rust there are VCI bags. The difference between anti-static and shielding is explained in a separate guide.
